Have You Ever Laughed At God?

I'm SOAPing through the life of Abraham. I have a new perspective on him. I no longer see him as the old, feeble, long grey-beareded Abraham.  I now see him like a Brad Pitt sort of dude. He's rich, has a smoking hot wife and can kick your tail if you make him mad. Go see it for yourself: Genesis 12:11, 13:2, 14:14.

Today I peaked in on a conversation between Abraham and God. By this stage of his life, Abraham is up in years (100 to be exact.) His wife, Sarah is not far behind (90). God has just announced to Abraham that he and Sarah are going to have a child. What does Abraham do? He busted out a LOL! Literally, he fell on the ground laughing at the Creator of the Universe (Gen 17:17). Then, in an attempt to salvage God's reputation, Abraham offers him an out by suggesting that God should just bless his other son, Ishmael and move on with His day.

As I simmered over this account, I began to wonder what kind of event in my life would cause me to laugh at God. What could He do that would make me chuckle and say, "Yeah...Right!?!"

Chances are we've probably already been there to a degree. Have you ever uttered this phrase: "If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be doing this, I'd told you that you were crazy!" That's the same thing.

The great thing about this principle is that most of the time, we're on a journey to that event and we don't realize it. I believe God uses everything in our lives to mold us and shape us into the person He created us to be. The problem is that most of us resist the opportunities to get there on the fast track. Why? Because we play it safe. We don't take risks and, like Abraham, we try to protect God by giving Him an out by not attempting anything for Him.

I had the opportunity to hear Jimbob Duggar recently. As he shared a story of his efforts to earn a seat in the U.S. Senate that failed, I realized that for him and his FAMILY, that experience was a success. It contributed to something he would do later in life. I'm sure had you told Jimbob and Michelle Duggar they would have 19 children, be Reality TV celebrities and travel the states sharing their story, they would have LOL!!! But because they took prayerful risk, earned valuable experience and leveraged it for God's glory, they are now in a position to see their influence multiplied over and over.

So what is it? What could God say to you that would make you laugh at Him? Life is too short to sit by and wait and see what happens. Recognize the opportunities in your life today as growth experiences for something greater down the road. Embrace challenges, fail quickly, and see where God will take you.

  1. I'm working on a series about rediscovering a sense of humor, and this is going to fit in nicely with the section "What the Bible says about humor." I enjoyed this post!
